In the $30 range, there are still a few good options for age-stated, rye-based bourbon, such as Henry McKenna Single Barrel and Eagle Rare Small Batch. While the taste wasn’t unpleasant, there are better bourbons out there for less than the suggested retail price of $29.99. To me, the palate indicates that the dog’s stay in the barrel was a relatively short one. There’s a slight cereal grain and earthy undertone that leads into a short, not particularly memorable floral and spice finish. Palate: Citrus and currant notes lead off the front. Nose: The floral notes from the rye shine through on the nose with a touch of dark fruit underneath. Overall, the bourbon seems young and thin with minimal legs. Where is anything redeeming I like in bourbon? I regret ever saying baked beans, but it’s been at the front of every sniff for me. Like the bourbon version of sniffing a bad malt liquor. I paid $75-100 for this bottle and I have to employ cognitive dissonance with every pour, even though that money went out to do better things than drink this bourbon. I went to a charity bourbon event several years ago to support UK football/charity and, being a recent law/business school grad, let’s just say I wasn’t in the running for anything good. Without a doubt, the ugliest experience I’ve had with bourbon is a neat pour of this Bird Dog Very Small Batch 10 Year.
